I finished reading Ryotaro Shiba’s ”Walking the Highway 5: A Travelogue to Mongolia”. Today is about two weeks after my trip to Mongolia ended. Originally, I had planned to finish reading it on the flight to the destination and use the contents of the book as a reference for my trip, but my plans fell through and I am here now.
As he is still a famous literary figure, he writes about the history and culture of Mongolia in detail, and is useful for understanding the background and past contents. When I finished reading it on the flight to the destination, I was able to feel his words there, but since I had not had much exposure to literature, I struggled with the large volume and his unique phrasing.
The good thing about Ryotaro Shiba’s journey is that although he had planned his trip in advance, he did not insist on following through with it, but instead accepted reality and enjoyed the moment. What made me feel the reason behind this great writer’s work was the introduction where he decided to go to Mongolia and the description of the starry sky in the South Gobi.
Honestly, the beauty of his journey makes me think about own journey as well.
Unlike today, the journey from Japan to Mongolia itself was rare, and if the means of transportation were limited, the routes and places to stay were also limited.
There may have been times when I felt like I was relying on God to hold on, but I was able to respond flexibly to unforeseen circumstances and changes in plans, and I always enjoyed reality.
Honestly, I liked the introduction and the opportunity that gave me a strong sense of his writing ability as a literary great, as it was similar to the dreams that every man has.
It is true that many people have imagined a distant world that is unrealistic and that they do not even know exists.
That feeling turned to Mongolia, and the lead sentence caught the attention of many people who knew it.
The depiction of the starry sky in the South Gobi was simply overwhelming. When I read his book, I thought again about my journey at Semi-Gobi that the stars floating in the night sky seemed to pop out of the deep darkness into my hands like a pop-up picture book.
Anyway, the black night sky and big, clear stars were impressive.
Looking back on all of this, I feel that I may not have been enjoying Semi-Gobi 120%.
Certainly, I had the rare experience of assembling a gel, and I was also able to see a starry sky that was so beautiful that I couldn’t see it in a gel near a big city.
However, there was limited electricity, and it was cold outside and there was nothing to do, so even though I was quite limited in what I could do, I didn’t fully enjoy being in an environment full of restrictions in the middle of an extraordinary world.
I felt like I should have taken my sleeping bag outside and stayed warm outside, looking up at the stars and drinking beer.
I learned from his book that it is important not to forget to have fun even in a limited environment, and to have an attitude of having fun even in unexpected situations.
